Craig Fox was born and raised in Halifax. An author bio for Fox in the spring 2015 issue of Shalom, the Atlantic Jewish Council’s (AJC) magazine, states: “In 2006 he moved to Israel to serve in a combat unit in the IDF. Craig fought in Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in 2009, and returned to Halifax after completion of his service in 2010. Since returning to Halifax, Craig has been working as a paramedic and still actively involved in Israel advocacy.”
Fox’s service was also mentioned in a 2015 article from The Canadian Jewish News about Jewish artists in Atlantic Canada. The article states: “Halifax-born and raised Craig Fox is a self-taught artist who served in the Israel Defence Forces as a lone soldier (one whose parents are not in Israel). Suffering post-traumatic stress disorder after being shot in Gaza and now working as a paramedic in Halifax, Fox paints animals in oil on canvas as stress relief. ‘Some of the art that I create, has obvious influence from my time in Israel, as well as honouring the soldiers I fought with,’ Fox said.”
The fall 206 issue of Shalom announces that Fox had been appointed as the AJC’s “Director of Jewish Student Life.” He wrote a short article in the magazine, stating, in part: “I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce myself properly to the community. My name is Craig Fox, and I am a Halifax native who has spent the last 4 years working as a paramedic in the city, and before that lived in Israel and completed a combat service in the IDF. I have been an active volunteer in both the local and national Jewish communities and am looking forward to taking on this role. With the new year I am excited to work with our fantastic student board and to grow Hillel Atlantic Canada both in our numbers of students involved, and in our engagement with the rest of the campus community and our local Jewish communities.”
