DINA TROY

Dina Troy is a Canadian from Montreal who immigrated to Israel with her family around 2007. She enlisted in the Israeli army in 2021.

Troy is a daughter of Gil Troy, a historian, author, columnist and a “distinguished scholar” at McGill University. The Jewish News Syndicate published an article on Gil in April 2024, writing, “Parents should instill as much Jewish identity, values and history in their children as possible with an understanding ‘that an attack on Israel is an attack on them,’ Troy said. ‘We’re going to raise a generation of Zionist Jews with fluency and identity,’ he said. ‘New Jews with the willingness to defend themselves when necessary but building, rebuilding and dreaming always, which is what Zionism has always been about.’”

Gil has written articles about all of his children, including one focused on Dina and published in October 2021 in the Jerusalem Post titled “To My Youngest Daughter Upon Her Joining the IDF.”

He writes, “Now, as you, my fourth child, join the Israeli army, I watch through competing historical lenses as an oleh dad. It’s easiest, and emotionally safest, to see this all in Jewish historical time, marveling at our ability to defend ourselves, and your opportunity to contribute to Israel, the greatest Jewish adventure in millennia. […] You have an advantage. Because enlistment feels so natural to you, you’re far more prepared for whatever will come than any of us middle-aged immigrants could be. With your great attitude, and your network of friends and siblings who have seen it all before, I am confident you will thrive.”

He adds, “So rather than regretting what could have been if you were going to college now, I am excited for all you can learn and grow and benefit from serving your people. And unlike most friends abroad, I don’t ask ‘how long will you serve?’ as if it’s a prison sentence; I join other Israelis in asking ‘where will you serve’ — because it’s a privilege and an opportunity. On Shabbat, when your siblings toasted you, they vowed: ‘We’ve got your back.’ They wisely advised: ‘Remember the little things — be kind, help your comrades, the day-to-day is key.’ Finally, they emphasized how important your service is, how the State of Israel needs you.”

Dina has three siblings that have also served in the Israeli military and are included in this database: Aviv Troy, Lia Troy, Yoni Troy.

One of Dina’s grandfathers is the now-deceased billionaire real estate investor, Marcel Adams.

This database was created by The Maple to document Canadians that have served in the Israeli military.
