Yisroel Eliyahu Suissa, dead at 21, is a Canadian from Montreal who immigrated to Israel with his family in around 2017. The rest of his family eventually returned to Canada, but Suissa remained in Israel to join the military. He served in Gaza for around 150 consecutive days after Oct. 7, 2023 as a machine gunner in the Paratroopers Special Unit. He died in a motorcycle accident while on a break from the military in March 2024.
In a 2023 Instagram post on a page for lone soldiers, Suissa wrote, “The best part of being in the army is, after really tough weeks, to sit with my friends, relax and feel accomplished! The hardest part about being a Lone Soldier is not getting to see my family.” He stated that two of his brothers had also joined the Israeli military in the past, “which gave me the connection I have now to the cause, and motivated me to draft to the army.”
